ADULT PHOTOGRAPHY

Wow, ok well, any nude work that is intended to show provocative images for the purpose of sexual arousal.

ART NUDE PHOTOGRAPHY

Many people do not know the difference between Playboy and art nude. Venus DeMilo, Michelangelo's David, and Helmut Newton ar fine art nudes. When you approach the human form (note I did not say just female) and display it in a manner that can be seen as artistic by say a group of peers and not your fellow child molesters, that is art. Well, you can't define art, but I will say this, if you have been shooting "art nudes" and have never so much as approached a gallery, rep, displayed them all on a public viewing platform, or somehow are ashamed of them, you are then in the category of sleazy guy wanting naked pictures of girls, you can't have on your own. I have a rep and 8 one man shows under my belt.

ASSISTANT/APPRENTICE

Usually these hard working, often abused individuals are working with a photographer to learn the trade. By assisting a working photographer, they get to learn how to mimic lighting conditions, load cameras, work with all the gear and see how a crew works. Almost all of the major pros have assisted at one point or another. This is doubley true when you get into trick gear like Hosemaster, Turbo filter, Ring flash, and all of the gel/scrim/flag and light modifiers. There are no good manuals on how to use them, so the result is often bad photos by not using the gear without a point of reference.

BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY

A boudoir is technically a woman's private sitting or dressing room. In the latter 20th century boudoir photography was symbolized by women that were not models posing for images for themselves or lovers in lingerie, or a bedroom, and as of late even nude extending beyond the bedroom to emulate men's magazines like Playboy or Hustler. The essential purpose is to create a fantasy.

EROTIC PHOTOGRAPHY

Well erotic is and is not nude, Helmut Newton is erotic as an example. Erotic is a way of showing people as being sexually attractive, but not in a blatant way. Gucci frequently uses erotic imagery in their ads. Yes, there is an Erotic Fashion.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY

Fashion is an ever evolving dynamic. To say you have a girl in a Chanel gown, does not make it fashion. David Lachapelle can have a porn star in tennis shoes, and it can be fashion. The best way to describe it is a blurb I heard Marco Glaviano (I did assist him at one point) say: "Fashion is a dream, it is not real, it has no substance, I don't know, I just make it." Marco is a crack up. Marco has a comfy couch at his studio I left nap-drool on when I should have been working. Fashion is chaotic surgery, not a formula. So many people say they shoot fashion and are full of shit. 3/4 of my work is not fashion. Although fashion is what pays my bills. When Fashion met Erotic, Maxim was born.

FETISH

Merriam Webster defines as: an object of irrational reverence or obsessive devotion or as: an object or bodily part whose real or fantasied presence is psychologically necessary for sexual gratification and that is an object of fixation to the extent that it may interfere with complete sexual expression. This falls under 'foot modeling' and things like that. I have people email models asking them if they have pretty feet and will they step on bugs for a video shoot. I guess bondage, s&m, and pretty much anything that arouses the viewer but is not directly sexual qualifies. Personally I do not like to see bound, gag'd, nipple-clamped models, maybe that makes me conservative...

FIT MODEL

The girl with the body of the runway model hired to ear the clothes as adjustments are made before runay shows. Many fashion houses have fit models come in so they can see the fit on a live body.

GLAMOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

This is a very broad term covering lots of bikini and leather clad (not fetish/bondage) models. Technically Maxim displays a modern form of glamour photography, but it has been so successful, I have since heard the term converted to "men's photography" or even just by the name "Maxim" style. I credit Paolo Z from ID models for getting me up to speed on that term. The same goes with Playboy vs nude photography, Playboy has created its own style of photography, albeit stale by now.

GO-SEE

A go see is when a model is sent to a photographer for a test by a 3rd party like an agent, manager, or client. Juergen Teller recently published a book called Go-Sees where he took photos of the girls just outside his office's doors, as the girls arrived at the studio. A go see may result in a test shoot, because usually a go see often results in a Polaroid of a girl taken and pinned up on the wall.

HAUTE COUTURE

This is an incredibly ms-understood term. Merriam Webster: the houses or designers that create exclusive and often trend-setting fashions for women. The fast pace of the fashion world, has several hierarchal elements and pecking orders. Haute Couture designers influence trends with a single dress or shoe. The forefront of fashion, pieces you could never possibly afford, and often you would consider them more art than wearable. Gap Capri's are influential, but they are pop culture, Dior, Chanel, and mainly the French houses produce couture, which has now become sort of a mafia type organization of designers. This is really a level of play that a rare few can compete in, and only a handful are invited to participate. 99% of the time when you buy couture, the pieces are made for you exclusively, and tailored to fit you. Exclusive one of a kind, cost of a house type pieces.

MATTE SHOOT

This is a tricky one, I have often heard photographers (not the major pros) use the term "matte-shoot" which is often rapidly turned around test shoots or tfp.

PIN-UP

This is a retro style of photography, and honestly, I do not know many guys under 50 that are too interested in it. It has become almost fetish in nature. An irrational interest in an art form that in it's prime was as risque as hardcore porn is today. Wow, we have relaxed or moral standards.

PLUS MODEL

I will state plus models are becoming a huge market. American women have a higher rate of obesity of almost any country in the world. The desire to see models women identify with and not envision as looking like has made the plus models boom. I adore Emmy, and Karrie, but I would personally rather snuggle up with Shalom Harlow (I keep running into her). As I am sure she would rather snuggle up with Brad Pitt (I think B is stalking 'me' I see him so much).

PORNOGRAPHY

Well, quite similar to adult photography and while in general people will simply accept that pornography only involves sexual content, but it is far more vague than that. Merriam Webster allows very specifically the the word "sell" in its entymology. Also including: the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction. According to Joseph Campbell and James Joyce, pornography:

Art that moves you to desire is pornography. All advertising art is pornographic. You are going through a magazine and you see a picture of a beautiful refrigerator and beside it stands a lovely girl with lovely refrigerator teeth. And you think, I love refrigerators like that. Pornography. Picture of a dear old lady and you think, "Oh, lovely old sweet soul, I'd love to have a cup of tea with that dear lady." That's pornography.

You get it? It has to do with a relationship to the object that's that of social, physical or otherwise action. You are not held in aesthetic arrest. Wow. What a picture. You get the point?

PORTFOLIO

There is not much explanation needed here. What I do wish to address is presentation and overkill. What you should do is go to a photographer, or third party you do not work with regularly, someone impartial. Have them look at your work and decide what goes in, because in our experience, models have the worst sense of editing. You may think you look cute in this or that photo, so put them in the family album, or burn them. A client does not want to see a shot of you and your puppy unless it is an Alpo ad.

PRODUCER

The poor s.o.b. that pays for everything and often arranges for locations, support services (trailers, craft services, props) and gets no credit.

RUNWAY MODEL

The use of a specific type of girl by all the designers, allows the writers and editors to judge collections on an equal canvas. Just because a good portion of American women are in a category of standing to loose 10 pounds, makes these girls a prime target to vent personal insecurities. The runway models generally will not have any cosmetic surgery, and less than 3% of the top models have breast implants. The average height is around 5'9" now nobody questions the height, but I rarely see any obese tall girls, so genetics plays a huge roll. How many normal looking girls play in the WNBA and nobody complains? You do not question their height or weight, and another method of judgment, is look at ankles and wrists, small wrists=lighter bone structure. Guys prefer thin chicks too.

TEST SHOOT

A test shoot is a photo shoot for a model and a photographer, possibly even a client, to work out concepts or work out ideas. It is a sort of brainstorming session with a purpose in mind, usually done before serious commissioned shoot. Test shots are more slanted towards a client or destination. Usually just a step above a "tfp". There are paid and unpaid tests. Usually a "go see" results in a test shoot, because an agent or manager sends you to go see a photographer, who will then take some photos as specified by the client. Another example is to see how a particular line of clothing fits on a model before the client commits to a full production, they send a model and wardrobe out for a shoot, usually with stylists and make up artists to support.

TRADE FOR PRINT/TFP

A trade for print, or tfp as it is commonly known, is a self-serving photo shoot for a model and photographer to exchange there services to one another for copies of the photographs. The pressure on those involved is purely to get a mutually agreeable subject where both parties come out with an equal commitment. Trade for prints, by definition, are always non-paid, and rarely have a make up artist, stylist or wardrobe.
